Gärtnerei Sannmann: Walking Dinner
Documenting the event “Walking Dinner” by and at Gärtnerei Sannmann, a female-led organic farm in the southeast of Hamburg in the end of June 2025. After a refreshing aperitif made with fermented elderflower and cucumber syrup (alcohol optional) the tour started in one of the farm’s greenhouses that is home to an abundance of tomato and cucumber varieties among other vegetables. Here, guests could harvest ripe cucumbers and enjoy them along with homemade dips, fresh tomatoes and bread that hung above a table like pieces of art to be consumed. Varieties like cucumis anguria, armenian cucumber or cucamelon captured everyone’s curiosity and tastebuds, before the group headed to the other greenhouses and fields to harvest the ingredients for the dinner.
Alina Sannmann, manager of the farm and host of the event, led everyone through the different greenhouses, explaining a lot about their demeter-certified cultivation, farming methods and philosophy, after which the guests could pick and harvest tomatoes, eggplant, beans and other veggies and herbs needed for the dinner that was cooked together: ratatouille.
After coming back to the rosemary greenhouse where a long table was placed with beautiful tableware by turning tables studio, the guests were greeted with a selection of wines and non-alcoholic beverages from Weinladen St. Pauli and the cooking could start.
As starters, fresh bread, dips and fermented veggies, fruit and blossoms were served. Soon the rosemary greenhouse was filled with the clattering of cutlery and cheerful chattering which did not stop during the main course and dessert which was little tartlets with figs and cream.
I like to think that everyone left not only with a full belly, but also with a full heart as it was such an enjoyable evening.
